Low Maintenance Mix

100% Tall Fescue

A Median Along a Roadway with Tall Fescue Grass Tall Fescue is a deep rooted turf and this capacity to grow very deep roots is what makes it one of the best long term low water usage sods. In comparison to other low water use grasses such as perennial rye grass it should be noted that tall fescue uses less irrigation and is certainly more attractive. This water efficient factor alone convinces many to consider installing only fescue. This low maintenance mix 100% fescue has three newer superior varieties of fescue that are the only documented glyphosate tolerant tall fescue available. (This naturally developed glyphosate tolerance means with proper maintenance there will be less weeds.) One of the most important advantages this fescue mix has over older fescue varieties is Lower Maintenance. Along with water conservation, maintenance budgets are some of the biggest concerns for commercial fescue users such as cities, counties, schools and high traffic and tree areas. Since this low maintenance mix is glyphosate tolerant, there will be less weeds. Maintenance costs will be reduced as chemical application, fertilization, and hand pulling will decrease. Maintenance costs will be additionally reduced as this low maintenance mix is a low grower and you can decrease the number of mowings.

In addition to the two outstanding features of water savings and lower maintenance, fescue can tolerate overly wet soil and is flood tolerant for short periods of time, is drought resistant with good resistance to wear and tear and overall a versatile adaptable sod for harsher weather.

Variety Characteristics

Pure Gold

Pure Gold was selected specifically for glyphosate tolerance to reduce weeds and lower maintenance costs. In Combination with the following two varieties, this fescue low maintenance mix is especially enhanced. Pure Gold is a very adaptable turf and is suitable for our drier western climates with lower humidities and the cool arid zones. It also performs well in a wide range of soil types. This variety also tolerates full sun to moderate shade and in comparison to other cool season turfs has excellent drought and heat tolerance. Pure Gold is deeply rooted and when established and maintained correctly will reduce your water usage over time. The wear resistance is good and this turf has a uniform medium density and a bunch-type growth habit. Pure Gold is a dark green color and has a finer narrow leaf blade. Another positive is the lower growth habit of this turf. Mowing heights are suggested from 1½" to 3" and is in height conformity with the following two varieties for easy maintenance.

Tomahawk

Tomahawk was selected specifically for glyphosate tolerance and is virtually identical to the Pure Gold variety. Tomahawk is a newer version of Pure Gold and accordingly all of the positive characteristics of this turf have been further strengthened.

Of Note: The Pure Gold and Tomahawk varieties were tested as PST-5DU and performed very well.

Matador

Matador was selected specifically for glyphosate tolerance to reduce weeds and lower maintenance costs. Matador is the newest and most improved to date version of a glyphosate tolerant turf. This variety of turf still maintains its deeply rooted characteristics for water savings and lower growth rate to lower maintenance costs. In addition to retaining and improving all the finest qualities of the above two varieties, certain characteristics of Matador have been vastly improved. The improved qualities are: Turf Quality, Brown Patch Resistance, Glyphosate Tolerance, Adaptability to all Climates except the most extreme areas of the southeast, Performance even during the cool wet winters of the Pacific Northwest, Mowing (Suggested height of 1" to 2½"). Turf managers will have vastly improved control of grassy weeds in tall fescue turf and will appreciate saving time, money, and water.

Of Note: Matador was tested as PST-5DU and performed extremely well.

Pure Gold: Tall Fescues

Pure Gold

Developed in Oregon by Pure Seed Testing, 'Pure Gold' was tested as PST-5DU. Released in 1999, 'Pure Gold' was the first turf-type tall fescue to exhibit a naturally developed tolerance to low rates of glyphosate herbicide. When combined with a separate program of broadleaf management, this glyphosate tolerance allows for a virtually weed-free turf. Grassy weeds such as Poa annua ( Annual bluegrass) are easily controlled with this program.

A dark green variety, 'Pure Gold' features a bunch-type growth habit, with a uniform, medium density. With a finer leaf blade and lower growth habit, 'Pure Gold' generates fewer clippings than many, older tall fescues.

Best suited for the drier western climate with lower humidities, 'Pure Gold' is excellent for home and commercial tall fescue uses, park and recreation, and roadside medians.

Uses:

  • 'Pure Gold' is a versatile, turf-type tall fescue ideally suited for western sod production, home and commercial lawns, park and recreation, golf course roughs, other areas suited to turf-type tall fescue. Excellent in blends, especially with Turf-Seed's glyphosate-tolerant 'Matador GT' and 'Tomahawk GT' tall fescues. When mixed with 5-10% improved Kentucky bluegrass such as 'Midnight Star', 'Pure Gold' provides a beautiful tall fescue turf for both home and commercial lawns.

Establishment:

  • Seed at 8-10 lbs per 1000 sq. ft, fall or early spring with a quality seed starter fertilizer.
  • Late spring and summer seeding is not recommended.
  • Keep seed bed consistently moist during first three weeks with seed germinating in 8-12 days. Mow when turf reaches approximately 2" in height. Expect full coverage in 6-8 weeks with limited use in 8-10 weeks.

Maintenance:

  • Maintain at a mowing height of 1.5" - 3".
  • Best maintained with deep, infrequent irrigation to promote a deep, healthy root system and reduce incidence of disease.
  • Fertilize at annual rate of 4?5 lbs. of actual N per1000 sq. ft

Weed-Free Tall Fescue Program:

  • 'Pure Gold' has a glyphosate tolerance of 4-6 ounces of 41% glyphosate per acre ( 0.10 oz of product per 1000 sq. ft).
  • No sticker or spreader should be added to the solution.
  • For small turf areas, best applied with a back-pack sprayer with a fan nozzle. DO NOT overlap spray pattern as damage may occur.
  • Turf may be sprayed 90 days after germination.
  • Some mild discoloration to the turf may occur, however, typical recovery withing 10-14 days.
  • Best success if applied to actively growing turf during spring months with minimal yellowing.
  • Do not apply if extreme temperatures, both freezing and heat, are forecasted.
  • Do not apply to turf in stress, ie drought or low fertility.
  • Read and follow all instructions for the use and safe handling of glyphosate.
