80/20 Xeriscape Blend

Tall Fescue and Bluegrass

80/20 Tall Fescue and Kentucky Bluegrass Blend Tall Fescue is widely known for its capacity to grow very deep roots and thereby become a long term low water usage turf. Because of the deep root system, tall fescue can tolerate overly wet soils and becomes flood tolerant for short periods of time. The water saving features of tall fescue make it highly desirable turf in drought situations and for areas where flooding may be a problem such as roadsides. Water efficiency is tall fescue’s strongest characteristic but severe drought survival and uneven surface clumping and higher maintenance concerns are an issues that a well-planned bluegrass mixture can solve. This 80/20 Xeriscape Blend is a new and improved solution for water conserving turf that is smooth and durable enough for golf courses, athletic fields, roadsides, xeriscape projects and residential lawns and at the same time reduces your maintenance costs.

Variety Characteristics

Barrington Tall Fescue

Barrington Tall Fescue is a strong performing fescue and its two strongest characteristics are its heat and drought tolerance. In addition, this fescue is highly disease resistant. Barrington tall fescue excels throughout the transition zones where turf type tall fescue dominates. The dark green color and medium fine leaf texture not only improve the overall appearance but compliment and enhance a successful blend with other fescue and bluegrasses. Standing alone or in a complimentary blend this fescue is a top xeriscaping favorite. Lower maintenance and reduced costs can be achieved with this fescue. Mowing heights are best at 1½" to 2½" but can tolerate to ¾". Being able to cut back on the number of mowings is an incredible incentive.

Rhizomatous Tall Fescue

Rhizomatous Tall Fescue is genetically improved and a newer type of tall fescue. The improvements is a fescue that produces rhizomes. (An underground stem that tills through the soil to spread the plant underground and form new growth is rhizome.) This remarkable rhizome adds very beneficial traits to the fescue which improve and overcome some of the drawbacks of traditional fescue by making the fescue behave more like a stronger bluegrass without loss of the fescue water efficiency. The desirable traits of bluegrass that this new turf mimics are:
  • Aggressive self-repairing
    • Self healing as it literally self-knits to fill in damaged or clumping spots or bare areas with new shoots of grass
  • Weed Growth is Discouraged
    • Traditional over seeding is lessened and overall maintenance costs can be lower
  • Denser Smoother Surface
    • Provides a safer and consistent recreational playing surface
Rhizomatous tall fescue also displays early spring green-up and is a bountiful green color throughout difficult and harsh winter conditions. The ability this improved fescue has to draw its moisture from a deep profile while remaining drought and heat tolerant and self-repairing is unique and admirable.

Barrister Bluegrass

Barrister Bluegrass compliments and completes this xeriscape blend. Barrister bluegrass further enriches and strengthens this blend by increasing the overall extreme drought survival rate of this blended turf. In addition this bluegrass has an extremely attractive dark color and maintains beautiful winter color. Barrister is highly resistant to disease and forms a very comfortable dense turf. A deep watering program is recommended to improve the root depth. One of its strongest characteristics is its low-mowing tolerance (½” to 2½”, best at 1” to 2”) and compatibile low-mow heights with the above fescues. Low-mow heights mean less maintenance and combined with its other outstanding traits make this bluegrass combined with the above fescues an especially desirable and cost effective turf for golf courses, athletic fields, parks and residential lawns.
